Formation of the Building Lifecycle Management Initiative

The Building Lifecycle Management (BLM) Initiative was established through a strategic partnership between the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and Autodesk, two global leaders in their respective domains of facility management and technology innovation. Recognizing the fragmented nature of data and processes across the commercial real estate lifecycle, IFMA and Autodesk co-founded this initiative to address the critical need for a unified, lifecycle-driven approach to building management.

This independent, technology-agnostic initiative seeks to bridge gaps across traditional industry silos, fostering collaboration among stakeholders from design and construction to operations and decommissioning. By promoting integrated data management, sustainability, and operational efficiency, the BLM Initiative aims to revolutionize how buildings are designed, operated, and maintained throughout their lifecycle. Its global focus spans North America, EMEA, Asia-Pacific, and LATAM, positioning it as a catalyst for industry transformation worldwide.

Key Objectives of the Initiative

  • Enhance Building Intelligence: Promote the seamless integration of data across all building lifecycle phases to optimize performance and decision-making.

  • Foster Industry Collaboration: Break down traditional silos to enable greater cooperation among real estate investors, building owners, facility operations, service providers, architects, engineers, construction, and technology leaders.

  • Champion Data Governance: Advocate for standardized data practices to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability across the built environment.

  • Promote Operational Efficiency: Enable organizations to achieve cost savings, reduce operational risks, and improve asset performance through holistic lifecycle management.

  • Advance Sustainability Goals: Support decarbonization and environmental sustainability through lifecycle-oriented practices and data-driven strategies.
